Janet Stilson’s Universe of Lost Messages is a novel that earns its ambitions. The world-building is rich and specific — “United America,” the Chav/Elite class divisions, the metaverse of floating messages, the technology of security and spider bots — and Stilson deploys it all with the confidence of a writer fully in command of her material.
The alternating first-person voices are handled with real skill, each narrator distinct and specific. The political dimensions — The Fist’s plan to weaponize Charismite gifts for control of human affect — give the thriller mechanics genuine ideological weight.
Kirkus described it as “a deliberately paced, engrossing tale set in a politically motivated, tech-heavy universe.” I would add: this is literary science fiction of genuine merit.
