The Advent House by Tim Jorgenson

The Advent House by Tim Jorgenson

Tim Jorgenson writes with a precise economy that suits the material. Set in Cuba during a period of political suffocation, The Advent House follows Gabriela and Tomas — two people brought together by grief, obligation, and the inconvenient tendency of state power to reach into private lives.

The novel is alert to the way ordinary people navigate systems that view them as expendable. The Bavarian Advent house — harboring secrets about a Bible network’s survival and Tomas’s true parentage — feels like a found object from history, dropped into the story with genuine weight. Jorgenson doesn’t over-explain it; he trusts the reader to sit with ambiguity.

This is careful, accomplished work. The kind of novel that asks more questions than it answers, and is better for it.
