The human mind is a strange and powerful thing that in size is not terribly big but has the capability of causing big things to happen for the human it controls. When the mind is functioning normally, it is evident by people’s behaviors being positive or at least acceptable; when it malfunctions, mental health symptoms begin to show, either internally or externally. Unfortunately, it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish the difference. Brooke Siem is a captive of depression that has altered her life in various ways. May Cause Side Effects is her memoir about her life, experiences, and feelings associated with her struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts.
Reading through her memoir, the reader is struck by the average and above-average life she has lived, with its ups and down, and possibly, how similar it may seem to their own life. Siem writes in a vulnerable and compassionate manner that puts the reader in her shoes, or at least accomplishes a better understanding, and raises questions about the benefits of medication with mental health symptoms and being an advocate for yourself – as no one knows you better than you.
